Dame Claire Bertschinger named as honorary fellow of the Dalai Lama Centre for Compassion

The DLCC is delighted to announce as its latest Honorary Fellow, Dame Claire Bertschinger DBE DL DHEd DSSC DSc (Hon Causa) MSc RGN.

Currently an Assistant Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Dame Claire was honoured as Dame Commander of British Empire by the Queen in 2010 for services to Nursing and to International Humanitarian Aid, and became a Deputy Lieutenant of Hertfordshire in 2012.

In 2017 she was the subject of a short film on the topic of courage, produced by the DLCC as part of its Compassion Matters course for year 5 and year 6 school children. The film focused on her work as a nurse in conflict zones, and the Band Aid movement which was inspired by 1984 BBC News report on her work. It was shown during a trial of the module at the Dragon School in Autumn term 2017, and at Orchard Meadow Primary school and Pegasus Primary school in Spring term 2018.

We are extremely grateful for Dame Claire’s contribution to the DLCC’s work, and are honoured to have her join the Centre’s Fellows.
